In 1898, planters of the Davies Company ordered “Laborers. . ” In 1908, a letter sent from a sugar plantation listed in alphabetical order on its “shopping list”—“Fertilizer, Filipinos. . ” (25). Not only were Asian immigrant laborers commodiﬁed as objects histories of immigration and exclusion of asians 35 to be ordered along with food supplies and fertilizers, but they were also ordered according to “quotas” designed to keep them in their place through a complex divide-and-conquer system.
Even within the text, the narrator of The Woman Warrior constantly questions the possibility of any authentic Chinese or Chinese American culture, identity, or experience. Recounting her parents’ lies, she writes, “I don’t see how they kept up a continuous culture for ﬁve thousand years. Maybe they didn’t; maybe everyone makes it up as they go along” (185).
