Slip the wider end of each paper clip through the holes at the ends of the balance beam. Ask an adult to drill three small holes in each of the pie pans, as shown in Figure 8b. String can be used, as shown, to hang small pie tins from the paper clips at each end of the beam. If the balance beam is not level after the pans are in place, add a small piece of clay to the lighter (turned-up) side.

Place the lump of clay in the measuring cup. How much water does the clay displace? What is the volume of the clay? According to the measurements you have made, what is the density of the clay? Does the density of clay that you just determined agree with the density you calculated for clay in the previous experiment? Now reshape the lump of clay. Mold it into a dish-shaped vessel with high sides. Note the water level in the metric measuring cup. Then carefully lower the clay onto the water in that cup.
