Long before he became a figure on the national stage, Abramovich was at the heart of this informal but powerful grouping and he owed his introduction to it to his relationship with Boris Berezovsky. From his earliest days as a tycoon, Berezovsky had been shrewd enough to realize that he needed political clout in order to protect and expand his newly acquired wealth. One way he set about achieving this was by investing in the popular weekly Ogonyok and it was through one of the editors there that he succeeded in gaining access to the ultimate powerbroker, Yeltsin himself.

One of Abramovich's fellow guests aboard Aven's yacht that summer's day in 1995 was a short, balding man who had made his fortune as a car dealer. His name was Boris Berezovsky and he was about to become Abramovich's mentor. At the time they met, Abramovich was in his mid-twenties but he certainly impressed Berezovsky, twenty 52 years his senior, that day. According to the broadcaster Alexei Venediktov, Berezovsky later told him that Abramovich was 'the most gifted young man he knew'(although when interviewed some years after he had fallen out with his protégé, Berezovsky claimed he had in fact said that, of all the businessmen he had met, Abramovich was the best at 'person-to-person relations').

And so it is with Abramovich within the walls of School No. 232. There are even plans to create a school museum dedicated to the achievements of distinguished old boys. It seems likely that Abramovich will find that a section of the museum has been devoted entirely to him. His own sentiments are almost equally fulsome. On 13 February 2001, he sent a telegram to the headmistress from the remote republic of Chukotka, where he was now governor: Dear Ludmilla, The fiftieth anniversary of your school is another opportunity for me to express my great gratitude for the education and the knowledge that we, your students, received there.
